Roark goes to Capitol Hill

By SUBMITTED TO C-P

Kathryn "Katie" Roark, who is currently a senior at Oak Grove High School was selected as a Miss. Senator at the American Legion Auxiliary Magnolia Girls State that was held at Ole Miss in June. Katie is a member of Zion Ridge UMC in Columbia. She is the daughter of Drs. Everett and Kineshia Roark of Hattiesburg. She is also the granddaughter of Felix Abram and the late Mary Abram, who were former teachers at East Marion.

Through a selection process, including interviews, Katie was chosen to represent the Magnolia State as one of two Senators at the American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. 102 Senators from around the nation (2 were from D.C.) participated in the program, which began on July 19. Katie returned home on July 26.

Prior to arrival, each team of senators had to develop and submit a bill for the legislative sessions. The senators ran a mock government, including the debating and passing of bills. They were taught and followed the official rules and procedures of Senate Sessions. Speeches were given during elections, and we are proud that Katie was elected to the major office of Senate Secretary.

While there, the Senators toured Capitol Hill, the White House, Arlington Nation Cemetery, the National Mall and many other well-known places. Katie and her fellow Mississippi senator were allowed the opportunity to meet with both Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith and Senator Roger Wicker. They were also given a special tour by some of Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith's interns.

Needless to say, it was a very invaluable opportunity, as Katie aspires to attend law school. This experience will likely help her decide on future avenues and pursuits. She was extremely proud to represent her state and looks forward to conquering everything this year will hold.
