HYDE-SMITH ANNOUNCES $5.9 MILLION TO ADDRESS DEFERRED VICKSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK REPAIRS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) today said the National Park Service will direct more than $5.9 million to address deferred maintenance needs at the Vicksburg National Military Park.

Hyde-Smith, who serves on the Senate appropriations subcommittee with jurisdiction over the NPS, said the $5.9 million will address erosion and ground deterioration at the historic Vicksburg attraction.

“Overdue maintenance should not be allowed to threaten the Vicksburg National Military Park and its historic significance.  I’m pleased funding has been appropriated for the National Park Service to address repairs needed to keep the Military Park safe and open over the long term,” Hyde-Smith said.

The funding will be dedicated to stabilizing historic areas of the park affected by erosion, including the Railroad Redoubt and the Texas State Memorial.

Regarding deferred maintenance at the Vicksburg National Military Park, the FY2018 Interior Appropriations Bill encouraged the NPS “to assess on-the-ground conditions and take all necessary steps to ensure the park is safe for visitors and employees, and is preserved for future generations.”
