Hyde-Smith presides over the Senate
 
WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTOK) - Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith opened the Thursday session of the United States Senate, a role assigned to her as a new senator.
 
The role was assigned by Senate Pro Tempore, Sen. Orrin Hatch.
 
Hyde-Smith called on Senate Chaplain Dr. Barry Black to offer a prayer, and led the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
 
“This is an important responsibility and I’m pleased to be part of this tradition,” Hyde-Smith said.
 
Hyde-Smith is expected to continue in this role on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
