Glenn Medical Center designation restored

Tri-County News

WILLOWS — The federal government is restoring Glenn Medical Center’s designation as a federal critical access hospital following a bipartisan deal written by U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), late Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale), and Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.).

In a news release from Schiff’s office, Thursday stated that the law is a “critical step” to reopening the shuttered hospital, which closed in late October after losing its critical access designation.

“Glenn Medical Center’s Critical Access designation, secured through bipartisan legislation, is a major milestone for our community. Thank you to Senator Schiff and the late Congressman Doug LaMalfa for their leadership,” Glenn County Supervisor Jim Yoder said in the release. “This designation is a crucial step toward reopening our facility and restoring local access to quality health care.”

The legislation also prevents major federal funding cuts to Medicare, according to the release.

“This critical moment for Glenn County’s residents would not have been possible without the incredible work of the late Congressman Doug LaMalfa,” Schiff said in the release. “His efforts to get this bill across the finish line will save lives and forever be a part of his legacy. I likewise want to recognize the work of Sen. Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, who was a great partner in moving this bill in the Senate. Around the country, rural hospitals are in trouble and under enormous financial stress.”

County Supervisor Jim Yoder expressed gratitude for the bipartisan effort. “Glenn Medical Center’s Critical Access designation, secured through bipartisan legislation, is a major milestone for our community,” said Yoder. He thanked Schiff and LaMalfa for their leadership.

Amy Micheli, Chief Operations Officer of American Advanced Management, highlighted the importance of the designation. “This moment is deeply meaningful for Glenn County and for everyone who believes rural communities deserve access to local, lifesaving care,” said Micheli. She noted that while the designation does not immediately reopen the hospital, it restores hope for the future.

Last month, Schiff announced the inclusion of his bipartisan legislation in a health funding agreement while touring the recently closed Glenn hospital facilities.

The bill, introduced in October 2025, aimed to restore the critical access designation to Glenn Medical Center.
