JACKSON, Miss. — Several events were held in the metro Friday in honor of Veterans Day.

The Jackson Public School District hosted several ceremonies. Veterans, their families and community members attended ceremonies Friday at Jim Hill and Murrah high schools.

Col. Frederic Brown, director of the school district's junior ROTC, said they're teaching students to acknowledge the sacrifices made by military heroes.

"We honor them, and we respect them," Brown said. "That's what it's all about — showing the love and respecting our veterans who have served this country so diligently and paid the price for our freedom in America."

Brown said that for the last 86 years, the junior ROTC program has been at all seven of the JPS high schools.

A Veterans Day ceremony was also held Friday morning inside the Veterans Memory Park outside Ridgeland City Hall. The park features benches and plaques that commemorate the six branches of service, along with the Walk of Heroes and a 7-foot-tall bell tower.

U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith was among the speakers at the Ridgeland event.
