Mississippi lawmakers react to US and Israeli military strikes on Iran

By WLBT Staff

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Several Mississippi lawmakers have issued statements regarding the United States and Israel’s “Operation Epic Fury” mission in Iran.

The AP reports that the U.S. and Israel launched a major attack on Iran on Saturday, and President Donald Trump urged the Iranian public to “seize control of your destiny” by rising up against the Islamic leadership that has ruled the nation since 1979. Iran retaliated by firing missiles and drones toward Israel and U.S. military bases in the region.

Some of the first strikes on Iran appeared to hit near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Smoke rose from the capital as part of strikes that Iranian media said occurred nationwide. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the 86-year-old leader was in his offices when the attack occurred.

In the wake of the strikes, some Mississippi politicians have issued statements.

Congressman Mike Ezell stated:

“Iran is facing the consequences of its dangerous and destabilizing actions. For decades, the regime has pursued nuclear ambitions while supporting terrorist organizations and threatening American lives, our allies, and stability across the Middle East. President Trump and his Administration have pursued diplomatic solutions, but protecting American citizens and service members must remain the top priority. We pray for the safety of our brave men and women in uniform and for our allies in the region. May God protect them and continue to bless the United States of America.”

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith stated:

“President Trump is acting decisively to confront the Iranian regime, a leading state sponsor of global terrorism and a grave threat to the national security interests of the United States and our allies. The President is sending a clear message that we and our allies cannot tolerate Iran’s extended aggression or destabilization of regions critical to global peace and security. I look forward to learning more from the administration about the scope and duration of this operation. I ask all Americans to join me in praying for our servicemembers. As President Trump said last night, ‘We ask God to protect all of our heroes in harm’s way. And we trust that with His help, the men and women of the armed forces will prevail.’”

Congressman Michael Guest stated:

“With the launch of Operation Epic Fury, America and our allies are taking steps to bring freedom to the people of Iran, dismantle a regime that has funded terror across the globe, and bring lasting peace to the Middle East. America must continue to stand as a beacon of freedom to people across the globe. We will continue to fight for truth, justice, and freedom from tyranny. Please join Haley and me in prayer for our soldiers, sailors, and airmen who find themselves in harm’s way. May God bless them and keep them safe.”

Congressman Bennie Thompson stated:

“Once again, President Trump has attacked Iran without Congressional approval or a clear strategy. As I’ve said before, we are more vulnerable to ensuing terrorism attacks today because of Trump’s reckless, inflammatory actions. I am deeply concerned about the administration’s attention to possible threats and its ability to protect Americans.”
