WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ahead of Memorial Day, U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) today issued a statement in which she encouraged Mississippians to practice and hold true to the ideals for which American service members have sacrificed, fought, and died.

“This Memorial Day, let us renew our commitment to the ideals our heroes died defending.  Not just in ceremony, but in the way that we live, serve, and strive to build a nation worthy of their sacrifice,” Hyde-Smith said.

“We come together each Memorial Day to honor the heroes who gave their lives for our country.

“Their selflessness and bravery secured the freedoms we enjoy today, and their sacrifices are etched into the foundation of our nation’s story.

“As we spend time with loved ones, let us remember the immense price paid by our fallen service members and their families.

“Their courage calls us to remember, to be grateful, and to never take our liberty for granted.

“Our Gold Star Families carry a burden that words cannot fully express – we must pledge to always walk beside them with compassion, respect, and support.

“More than 150 years ago, it was the people of Mississippi who helped give rise to this day of remembrance.

“Today, Mississippi remains a cornerstone of that legacy.

“This Memorial Day, let us renew our commitment to the ideals our heroes died defending.  Not just in ceremony, but in the way that we live, serve, and strive to build a nation worthy of their sacrifice.

“May we never forget that freedom is never free.  God Bless America.”
