WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) and colleagues today rebuked President Biden and his administration’s failed border and immigration policies, which imperils border security and public safety.

Hyde-Smith on Wednesday participated in a news conference to highlight the risks the nation will face as unprecedented numbers of illegal immigrants head to the United States as the administration prepares to lift Title 42, the temporary, pandemic-related authority to expedite the expulsion of migrants.

“I think it’s pretty clear that everyone who has spoken today wants President Biden to do his job and to protect the American people.  This administration is continuing to just wreak havoc on the southern border,” said Hyde-Smith, who serves on the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee.

“One million more people would cross the border illegally in the first six weeks after Title 42 is eliminated.  That’s what we’re looking at.  It will make this issue that is already an unbelievable crisis, it will make it three-times as bad as it is now,” she said.

Hyde-Smith highlighted the duplicity of the Biden administration assertions that Title 42 is unnecessary because COVID is abating, while “in the same breath asks Congress for billions of dollars in more COVID relief.”  Regarding public safety, Hyde-Smith pointed to the flow of illegal drugs across the southern border, which are being detected in Mississippi.

She also cited the administration effectively ending the COVID emergency for illegal immigrants, while seeking to restore a federal mask mandate on the American people.

“Our job is to protect Americans.  Our job is to enforce American laws.  When it comes down to it, the Biden Administration is just simply using the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse to push through these liberal policies, and it just doesn’t matter what it’s doing for the safety of Americans.  It is unbelievable,” Hyde-Smith said.  “Again, we’re just asking President Biden to do his job, to protect Americans, and to enforce the laws that have already been passed.”

In 2021, DHS officials recorded more than two million crossings by illegal immigrants along the southern border, which does not include the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants who crossed the southern border undetected.  There were 1.1 million migrants turned away from the border under Title 42 authority last year.

This week, Hyde-Smith signed on as an original cosponsor of Senator John Boozman’s legislation (S.4082) to prevent the Biden administration from diverting U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs resources intended for veterans to manage the growing illegal immigration crisis on the southern border.
