FEMA grant will help Harrison County schools make roofs stronger against storm winds

Eight Harrison County schools in need of stronger roofs to withstand hurricane-force winds of up to 180 mph will benefit from a federal grant of nearly $7 million, lawmakers said.
 
Communities also will benefit because buildings on the campuses can be used as “shelters of last resort” during emergencies, according to officials.

BILOXI, Mississippi -- Ingalls Shipbuilding celebrated the 2018 graduates of its apprentice program with commencement exercises at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center Saturday.
 
U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith delivered the keynote address in front of the 110 graduates of the Class of 2018, their families, friends and Ingalls instructors and officials.

FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith stopped by the Forrest County Board of Supervisors meeting Monday morning.
 
The board thanked her for her work in getting Forrest County and Petal Schools one step closer to having safe rooms. Hyde-Smith stepped in and got eight out of 10 rooms approved for the bidding process, and is working on two more.

Mississippi fire departments get federal grants
 
WASHINGTON (WTOK)- U.S. Senators Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., today announced the award of $851,954 in FEMA grants to fire departments in Columbus, Biloxi, Hattiesburg, Senatobia, Laurel, Bentonia, and Woodville. The grants are being awarded as part of the Fiscal Year 2017 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program.

Senators vote to extend National Flood Insurance Program

WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Senators Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith voted to extend the National Flood Insurance Program Tuesday.
 
The program was set to expire at midnight. The four-month extension does not include reforms, something Senator Wicker called for his colleagues to consider in order the keep the program financially sustainable.

The House has passed a bill to reauthorize the National Flood Insurance Program(NFIP) through November 30th. It passed on a vote of 366-52 and awaits passage in the Senate.
