US courthouse in Mississippi named for former Sen. Cochran

A federal courthouse in Mississippi has been named for a longtime Republican U.S. senator who resigned this year.
 
Officials gathered Thursday in downtown Jackson to unveil the new name on the Thad Cochran courthouse.
 
The building opened in 2010 with a dozen courtrooms and other federal offices.

Just two weeks into her role as a United State Senator, Cindy Hyde-Smith found herself presiding over the Senate and gaveling down the Democrat minority leader during a quorum call.
 
"To me, I am just thinking procedure and it does not matter who it is," Hyde-Smith said. "I am just trying to run the Senate the way it is supposed to run and not make a mistake."

WASHINGTON (AP) - Brett Kavanaugh spent time on Capitol Hill Tuesday, meeting with Republican leaders as the battle begins over his nomination to the Supreme Court.
 
Republicans have reacted positively to President Donald Trump's pick, but McConnell has little margin of error to get Kavanaugh confirmed. The GOP has a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate.
